How NOT To Do Business Online

To all my enemies, with love… I know that many of you have waited for this confession for too long.

EmotionRays.com is not a new website. I own it since 2003. And I am selling games from other developers since 2004. In fact, my website is much older than Logler or GameZebo. It has the same age with Big Fish Games. But unlike those websites, EmotionRays.com is a good example of an unsuccessful game archive.

Just some facts: the average daily visits of EmotionRays.com is about 1600 unique visitors. The average profit is about $350/Month. The monthly payment to keep the website live is $137. There are just a few thousands of registered members, and most of them have never come back. None of marketing actions (like discounts, gifts for activity and so on), that successfully worked on other websites, works here.

So, I can’t tell you what to do to build a successful online business. But I can teach you what to do to be unsuccessful.

Rule 1. Don’t Act Too Much, Give It Time

There are millions of prospects in the Internet. And they are using search engines to find something to buy.
So its like a fishing, you have just to sit and wait until one of them will accidently come to your website and buy something. Since there are millions of them, you can be sure to have 2 or 3 sales every day.

Rule 2. Design Is Important

The most important thing for the website is to have a professional design. Spend most of your money into designers and create something like a Da Vinci’s picture. Your visitors will like the view of your website. They will even tell you about it. However, its still a mystery why most of them don’t like to use your website…

Rule 3. You Know Your Customers Better Than They Know Themselves

NEVER even try to make a dialog with a customer. Read many books istead. Books about the web design and online marketing. Do what they say, - they know your customers much better than you can imagine. However, don’t be surprised to see the authors of such books with no spare money to spend and no successful business online…

Rule 4. Offer Gifts

Offering gifts is probably the best way to spread the news about your website over the world. A news that some company is stupid enough to give something for nothing. This smart marketing decision will get you a LOTS of visitors who never buy, but do everything to get a free gift. However, the mystery is where to get the money to buy the promised gifts for them…

Rule 5. Explain To Your Visitors Why Your Website Is Better Than…

So, you are so cool to invent some feature that www.myassholecompetitors.com don’t have and never had before. That is just great! I mean, a great reason to explain your visitors why they should use your website - because you have something that www.somedomain.com don’t have. And those who are using that somedomain.com every day should switch on your website. However, there are just two or three visitors who ever used the ‘key’ feature, and your competitor is still strong enough to not even notice your presence.

Rule 6. Be Above The Crowd. Be Individual

Professional community sucks. They already have friendly relationship with your primary competitors. And they will not give you any helpful advice because of that. So you need to fight your own way to the top to make the others to respect you. And that is the only way to get some respect. However, most of the rapidly grown competitors says on their websites that they are very grateful to… their own competitors for helping them to grow.

Rule 7. Make Generous Offers To Strangers

When you don’t have enough money to pay people for their work, you always can try to find someone who will agree to help you for a share in your business. Just let it be - when you already have nothing, you have nothing to lose. Anyway, its still hard to understand why ALL of such “partners” are always cheating. They try to take all your business or they just leave on a half-way…
Rule 8. Just Give Up!

When you finally understand that everything you do make no positive influence on your business, its a great time to fall into a depression, or even to start to drink. Tell your friends how stupid you are. Tell yourself how foolish you are. Cry about your low skills. And bury your business, or sell it for a few thousand dollars to someone else…

Now Seriously…

Believe me or not, but I did ALMOST EVERYTHING from this list. I said ALMOST, because I am not going to sell EmotionRays.com. I don’t have much of customers, but I realize that I am responsible for any of them. Even if there will be just one customer who will use his lifetime discounts at least once a year, I am responsible to keep these discounts for him. If there will be just one customer who will need any kind of technical support for his purchase - I am responsible to give a technical support to him. I gave the promises to people who believed me. So you can come to EmotionRays.com with no fear, open an account there and enjoy all the promised benefits. They won’t disappear until at least one of you will use them.

No sadness at all. Just an attempt to review all I did and to find a way out from the situation.

The rule 7 says “Make generous offer to strangers”. So, do you want me to make a generous offer to you? :)
Just kidding. Let me know your idea. You can contact me through the “Contact Me” page on this blog. This is the best way, because my e-mails are heavily spammed.
